BBYO : About Us : Glossary

General Lingo:

  • AZA - Aleph Zadik Aleph,  standing for Ahava Tzadakah Achdu't, meaning brotherhood, charity and unity. BBYO boys.
  • BBG - B’nai B’rith Girls
  • Ruach - Means “spirit” in Hebrew. Show this by chanting.
  • MIT - Members in Training, an evening for members to learn about BBYO.
  • PIT - Parents in Training, an evening for parents to learn about BBYO.
  • YOFI - Youth Organisations Funding Initiative. Each chapter raises money to compete for the YOFI cup, where the money raised goes to charity.
  • Madrich/a - Means “Leader” in Hebrew (m/f).
  • Boger/Bogeret - Means Graduates. They are graduates of BBYO who help staff events (m/f)
  • Me’itanu - Means “From Us” in Hebrew. BBYO magazine.
  • Tzevet - Means “Staff” in Hebrew. People who run these fantastic events.

Events:

  • CLTC - Chapter Leadership Training Camp. A weekend for those newly elected on chapter execs.
  • Convention - Long winter weekend event.
  • New Members Weekend - Long weekend run for new members of BBYO.
  • National Weekend - A social interactive event.
  • ETC - Executive Training Camp. The first step to becoming a BBYO leader.
  • Shorashim - Means “Roots” in Hebrew. Summer Camp for ages 13-15.
  • DLTC - District Leadership Training Camp. More advanced leadership training.
  • Veida - Means “Conference” in Hebrew. The Annual General Meeting is held and the new national executive are elected, signalling the beginning of a new BBYO year.

Chapter Terminology:

  • Chapter - Holds meetings run by executives (execs) regionally each week.
  • Exec - Runs weekly meetings. Made up of President, Vice, Admin, Welfare, JZA, Programmer.
  • President - Runs the show.
  • Vice - In charge of the chapter membership, helps the Pres.
  • Admin - Handles money, secretary.
  • Welfare - In charge of making sure that the members are aware of current affairs.
  • Programmer - Writes and organises the weekly chapter programmes.
  • JZA - Jewish and Zionist awareness officer.
  • National Exec - After being on your chapter exec, you can run for National, to run events for the whole district.

 

BBYO’s 5 Ideologies:

  • Pluralism - BBYO is an open space for everyone to share and discuss all the different types of Judaism.
  • Judaism
  • Activism - Action to help improving and repairing the world through positive deeds.
  • Peer Leadership - A leader organises, inspires and takes responsibility for a group.
  • Zionism - a commitment to the concept of Jewish peoplehood (Am Yisrael), and the expression of that in the land of Israel.
